Funding for 400m stretch in New Lynn

The Government has confirmed funding for the next piece of Te Whau Pathway in the Whau Local Board area — a brand-new 400-metre stretch linking Wingate Street to Rata Street in New Lynn. 🚶‍♀️🚴

Thank you to the government for the funding and everyone who has supported the project, spoken up and kept the kaupapa alive. Each section completed takes us another step closer to the Trust’s vision, of an off-road pathway that connects Auckland’s two harbours.
Tony Miguel, Chair of Te Whau Pathway Environmental Trust

This section will feature new concrete pathways and boardwalks, including a crossing at Rizal Reserve. But it’s not just a path — it’s another vital link in the chain, connecting our neighbourhoods, parks, and people along the awa.

Originally agreed back in 2020, it’s been uncertain whether existing funds would stretch far enough to cover this part of the pathway. Thanks to perseverance, careful budgeting, and good planning, we’re delighted to confirm it’s now fully funded. 💪

The Whau Local Board is delighted that funding has been approved, together we will provide a safe walking and cycling connection between Avondale and Kelston.

Over the next few months, the construction team will be lining up materials and pre-cast piles, with a site office set up off Rata Street under the powerlines. If all goes to plan, the Wingate to Rata Street link will be complete by November 2026 for all Aucklanders – including walkers, runners, cyclists and wheelchair users.🌳✨

This milestone brings us closer to the vision of a fully connected Te Whau Pathway — a taonga for our community, our tamariki, and the environment.
