Girls with Hi-Viz visit Te Whau Pathway Office
As part of the nationwide Girls with Hi-Vis initiative led by Connexis, HEB Construction was proud to welcome 33 enthusiastic young women to the Te Whau Pathway Project construction site. The Girls with Hi-Viz programme gives female high school students a first-hand look into the dynamic world of infrastructure and construction, opening their eyes to the wide range of career choices available within the industry.
This marks the second year that Te Whau Pathway Project has hosted the event. Students from Avondale College, Lynfield College, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Maungarongo, Westlake Girls, and Orewa College, joined us for a day of discovery, learning, and connection.
The day began with a guided tour of The Northwestern Connection led by Louisa Brunt (HEB’s Site Engineer for this part of the pathway). Louisa offered a behind-the-scenes look at the construction process, discussed the challenges of building in an ecologically sensitive environment, and highlighted the integration of mana whenua storytelling through the intricate balustrade artwork.
The group then explored The Horowai Connection, walking 650-metre from the abutment at Te Pai Kawau to the piling work currently under construction. Along the way, they experienced the full scale of the project and got a close-up look at Te Kowhai Nui, our travelling gantry at work.
In the afternoon, students engaged with a panel of women working in the construction sector, including team members from HEB and Auckland Council. The panelists shared their career journeys, spoke about the rewarding aspects of their roles, and answered insightful questions in a lively Q&A session.
We hope the day ignited curiosity and confidence — and perhaps even planted the seed for a few future engineers, project managers, or site leaders. It was a privilege to host such a vibrant, inquisitive group and to help shape the next generation of women in construction.
