Tree Planting

Planting days are a great way to spend time outdoors, meet people and help care for the Whau River. Planting the right native species in the right places helps improve water quality and create a healthier environment for people and wildlife.

People have been coming together to care for the Whau since 2000, when Friends of the Whau began organising community events. The Whau River Catchment Trust (WCRT) took over this work in 2012. Find out more on the Whau River Catchment Trust website.

Planting days are also run by EcoMatters, Community Waitākere and Sustainable Coastlines.

New volunteers

Environmental volunteering is a fun way for people of all ages to get outdoors and make a difference. Bring your whānau, pull on your gumboots and give planting a go — there’s something special about putting your first tree in the ground. Individual volunteers are welcome too.

Planting days usually happen in winter. Weeding and mulching are important parts of caring for planted areas, and take place at other times of the year.

Keen to get involved? Fill out the form below and the WCRT will email you about upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Groups and organisations

The WCRT also welcomes groups, organisations and companies who’d like to volunteer together. Fill out the form below to let them know you’re interested in joining an event as a group.
