Making memories on Divich

Nature Day with Tirimoana School at Divich Reserve

Fifteen students from Tirimoana school walked to Divich Reserve, the park hidden behind the Te Atatū South Kindergarten. They took part in water quality testing activities with Anastasia Zaleta from Whitebait Connection and bioplastic art creations with Jody Yawa McMillan and Dominque Crawford (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) from Whau the People.

Before we realised that the Whau water was not fit for swimming, you might have found kids playing in the Whau River and its tributaries. In this short video, Louise Graham, who is an Assistant Principal at Tirimoana School, remembers exploring a local stream off Divich Ave with her children in the nineties.

Back at school

With help from Te Whau Pathway Project, Tirimoana Primary school has also been growing native plants from seed and small seedlings.  Students planted some of these plants along the Whau River in 2023 at Covil Park. The remaining plants were planted at the school by the Tirimoana Environment Team next to their bike track and in a planted section of their school called Ti Rakau.

School planting at Tirimona school, a month after our Nature Day, on 25th June 2024.
