Hidden creatures

Nature Day with Glendene School at Glendene Reserve

Glendene School students walked to Glendene Reserve before being split into two groups. These Year 6 students were then split into two groups – one learnt about water quality while the other got to create unique and beautiful bioplastic art with Whau the People.

The Glendene Stream lies at the bottom of a few overgrown paths, a hidden oasis in surrounded by native plants and trees which is surrounded by parklands. Many children were familiar with the playground that can be seen at street level, but not many knew about the stream down the gully as it is shielded from view by native bush.

Down at the stream’s edge, kids took water samples to test temperature, pH levels and water clarity. They also looked at dissolved oxygen and nitrogen.

Creatures were found hiding in the water: oligochaete worms, rounded snails, flat spiral snails, midge larvae, sandfly larvae and banded kokopu. Quite a lively lot for a Friday morning!

Anastasia Zaleta, from Whitebait Connection, is fascinated by the biodiversity of streams. In this short video, Anastasia talks about some of the creatures she found in this tributary flowing into the Glendene Stream.
