Kayaking Whau history

Thirty Year 8 students from Room 1 at Blockhouse Bay Intermediate had the opportunity to learn about and voyage on Te Wai Whau.

This was the first time these students had been out on their local river!

This event, developed by HOOPLA, is part of a pilot project called Connecting Rangatahi to the Awa. The aim of this project is to find ways for all rangatahi to get to know their local river and how they can care for its health.

Mapping

Students investigated the ecology and history of the awa and created large maps of their research. Later on, with the help of Auckland Sea Kayaks, the students were able to get out on the water and experience the Whau River for themselves.
