Planting Day in Covil Park

Sixty kids from Freyberg Community School rotated through different activities under a bright winter sun. David Tanenui, from the Te Atatū Marae Coalition, shared his knowledge about Matariki and tamariki chose their favourite Matariki stars. David then got the kids to explain why!

Over 500 native trees, shrubs and grasses made it into the ground on this day including kōwhai, pūriri and mānuka 🌱🌱🌱 The highlight of the day for many tamariki was learning that the pōhutukawa they were planting might live up to 1000 years old! Thanks to Gary and Paris from Te Whau River Catchment Trust for sharing their knowledge about the plants and taking the kids through the planting process.
