At the Whau Holiday Art Programme, 9-13 year olds had a fabulous week exploring the histories and ecologies of Te Wai o Whau (Whau River) and learning new creative skills. Students went on walks along the Whau River, collecting leaves, observing birdlife and bringing back inspiration to create The BIG Whau River Map.
The playground at Archibald Park was also a definite highlight!
Artwork will be on display on spaces near Te Whau Pathway construction sites later this year. Some of the artwork is shown below.

The BIG Whau River Map
The kaupapa for tamariki and rangatahi living in the surrounding suburbs of the Whau River was to deepen their connection with the histories and ecologies unique to the Whau area.
Through making The BIG Whau River Map, they journeyed back in time and imagined what the Whau River once looked like. They considered the importance of taking care of Te Wai o Whau today, and of looking after the wildlife that lives on, in and near the awa. Their experience is captured in The BIG Whau River Map.
