Ranging from 6 to 13 years old, 27 children attended the second Whau Holiday Art Programme in the October. The kaupapa of this programme was to connect children with the Whau River. A few children already knew about the Whau River already, but many were unaware of this beautiful gem.
The programme was held at Te Atatū Boating Club. The room had stunning views overlooking Te Wai o te Whau which allowed the children to experience the ever-changing moods of the river.
Creativity was partly focussed on making artwork to go on display along areas of Te Whau Pathway, including the highly colourful tiles – Toi Rōpinepine – pictured below. Kids also learnt how to design a t-shirt, in celebration of World Car Free Day.
On the Thursday, children helped mount The BIG Whau River Map, artwork from the July holiday programme, to a fence between the Covil Ave playground and Te Whau Pathway construction site. Toi Rōpinepine will be installed along the pathway at a later date.
Tamariki were from a wide range of schools near the Whau River Catchment area – Arahoe School, Avondale Primary School, Edmonton Primary School, Flanshaw Road School, Freyberg Community School, Glen Eden Intermediate, Henderson Intermediate, New Lynn School, New Windsor Primary School, Rangeview Intermediate School, Te Atatū Intermediate … and more!
Aside from learning about the local area and picking up new art skills, friendships were made from those living in different suburbs along the Whau. The programme had not just connected people to the river, but also to each other. Should out to all the clever young artists who attended –
Alice Miller-Ibos, Annie Martin, Ari Duncan, Belen Carmona, Ella Campbell, Fae Duncan, Giovanna Machado Dirk, Ida McMeel, Isabelle Campos, James Miller-Ibos, Leila Richard-Marsters, Lorin Carmona, Meila De Sousa, Mele Folaumoeloa, Milo Lilo, Paige Terwiel, Peata Rhynd, Rahel Wadhawan, Reuben Harwood, Ruby Anderson, Ruby Boyce, Shira Wadhawan, Sol Duncan, Tash Thomson, Taylor Mackie, Thais De Sousa and William Folaumoeloa.
Thank you to Whau the People for pulling this amazing opportunity together (again)!
