After four cancellations due to Covid-19, Te Whau Day Out finally took place on a gloriously sunny morning, opening with Taumata o te Whau blessing the day with a karakia. Both land-based and water-based activities were immensely popular – we got over 150 people out on the river over just under three hours!
There was positive feedback regarding Te Whau Pathway, a real interest in learning about the river’s history and we did excellently with rubbish! At the end there was just one bag of recycling, one bag of compost and less than half a bag of landfill.
The event ran smoothly thanks to parents of local schools and to the volunteer students from Henderson High, Kelston Girls College and Kelston Boys High, the Kelston Community Hub board of trustees and the Community Patrol New Lynn/Kelston.
The Whau Coastal Walkway Environmental Trust thanks all the organisations that supported Te Whau Day Out including EcoMatters, MPHS Community Trust, Barefooted NZ, Waitākere Outrigger Club (Waka Ama), Auckland Sea Kayaks, Chinese Conservation Education Trust, Sport Waitākere, Tala Moana in Kelston, Beca Consultants, Dr Peter Maddison and Rose Gilbert.
Thanks to Community Waitakere for sponsoring the stage and to the friendly and helpful volunteers from the Glenora League Club (Under 14yrs) for minimising our waste by making sure people used the correct bins.
